Welcome to Next in Dev
What’s up, everyone? Welcome to Next in Dev. In this issue, I share some exciting Payload CMS updates, discuss Next.js v16, and raise some red flags with AI.

Payload CMS
Payload CMS team release version 3.60.
You can now include multiple locales in fallbackLocale. fallbackLocale now expects an array and will check the values in order until it gets a value in return. This removes the need to do this manually.
There's now a settings menu in the navigation menu by default. You can configure this in the new settingsMenu property to admin.components config. This upgrade comes with new GearIcon and SettingsMenuButton components, as well.
The UploadFeature in Lexical Rich Text supports the ability to enable and disable collections allowed to appear in the upload drawer.
Also in the Lexical Rich Text field, you're now allowed to use markdown shortcuts on the client side.
There are several bug fixes that you should check out in case you're having issues with anything.

In case you missed it: This video goes over how to get started with Postgres and what you need to know before you get going.
Figma
Figma introduced some new accessibility features. I'm always a big fan of companies making their products easier to use for more people. Many of the changes appear to be keyboard controls for the canvas. The screen reader is also allegedly more reliable.
You're now able to push your Make projects from Figma to a GitHub repository. Now you can vibe-design something and edit it later in your editor of choice.
Next.js and Shadcn
The team released Next.js version 16 beta. There's honestly too much in this update to write about. I do see a couple of breaking changes in the notes, so be sure to review those before upgrading your project.
Nothing new from Shadcn this time.
AI news
I like AI. That's not a secret. But, I need to raise a red flag.
According to Sam Altman, OpenAI wants to develop an AI that pretends to be your friend. They also want an AI used by adults to be for verified adults. There are so many safety considerations to this. Outside of the moral and ethical considerations of allowing erotica to be generated on the platform with very few guardrails, it's a mistake to allow AI to act like a friend.
Friends, please hear me when I say: AI is not your friend. It is not a counselor. It cannot satisfy you. It does not care about your mental health. At best, AI is a tool that can help you be more efficient at work. At worst, it's an echo chamber of your worst thoughts.
With that, just be careful with AI. Don't let it be more than it is.
We'll see if OpenAI's "expert council on well-being" addresses any of this (I doubt it).
Anthropic released Haiku 4.5. Another marginal upgrade, but, hey, performance gains are gains no matter how small.
So, other than my dooms-dayer attitude, not a lot happening in AI this week.
Railway
Railway had their biannual offsite, so there are no new updates here.
I have a video coming out Monday on how to deploy a Payload CMS project on Railway. You can get early access here.
