Welcome to Next in Dev

What’s up, everyone? Welcome to Next in Dev. In this issue, I write about Payload's latest version, new Shadcn updates, and exciting Railway features.

Giveaway

My JetBrains giveaway is now closed. I'll be doing another one soon! You currently have {{rp_num_referrals}} referrals.

Payload CMS

The Payload CMS team released versions 3.59 and 3.59.1.

The big features that were released includes the slug field. Now you don't need to create your own, it's provided by default.

The findDistinct operation got a few upgrades. You can use any depth for relationships and you can use the operation on fields nested in relationship and virtual fields.

After the exciting news about Payload CMS on Cloudflare last week, the team added the Cloudflare template to create-payload-app.

It looks like 3.59.1 reverted a change to the drizzle-orm to fix breaking bugs.

Figma

Figma released a ChatGPT app that allows you to trade text for a FigJam diagram.

Yep...that's it this week.

Next.js and Shadcn

Again, there were no minor updates to Next.js this week. I hear rumblings that Next.js 16 will be coming out soon. I feel like I'm still learning 15, though.

Shadcn released some new components. Things like a Spinner, groups of keys, buttons, and inputs, and fields. I think they look great.

AI news

OpenAI announced a partnership to get GPUs from AMD. I wonder how Nvidia feels about that. It's wild how much money is being spent on hardware.

They also released a new app SDK, which allowed Figma to release their app. I think Canva has one, too.

Codex is now available to everyone. I honestly thought it always had been.

Claude Code now supports plugins. It's in beta right now, but I'm sure there will be plenty of marketplaces for plugins. I hope they have a way to review and validate the plugins before installing.

Railway

I've been using Railway's buckets, and they keep getting better. Now you can easily add the environment variables to the appropriate service. I have a tutorial coming out soon using this tech, and I'm excited.

Also added as a beta feature, you can now monitor HTTP service metrics in observability. You'll need to opt into this in your account's settings.

What did I miss? There’s so much happening in modern web dev that I’m sure I have missed something. Please share your thoughts in the comments or reply to this email. I want to address your suggestions and may include them in future newsletters.

Thanks for reading. See you next time.
